SAILING AROUND THE WORLD - Our EXPEDITION Sailing Route
Our sailing route takes us across all five of the world's oceans: the Pacific Ocean, Indian Ocean, Atlantic Ocean, Arctic Ocean, and Southern Ocean, with stops on all seven continents: Asia, Africa, Europe, North America, South America, and Antarctica. The route accomplishes our two primary goals; a route that gets progressively more difficult as we head west and a route that sets the stage for Roake, Ren, and Freyja to be older when we face the challenges of high-latitude sailing.
The route begins with “The Coconut Milk Run”, arguably the best route to sail across the Pacific. We will use this time to acclimate to life aboard while embracing the delights of trade winds and warm waters. Our time sailing the Pacific Ocean, Timor Sea, Java Sea, and Indian Ocean to prepare us for the formidable task of sailing around the Cape of Good Hope. Once we have rounded the Cape, we'll continue east to Brazil and then turn south to round the horn. Our 36,000-plus miles of sailing will have helped prepare us for one of the most daunting legs of the expedition, crossing to Antarctica. It is here we will have succeeded in setting our first world record. Once we have successfully crossed the Drake to and from Antarctica our expedition turns north to return to Galapagos completing our circumnavigation but the expedition doesn’t end here. We will continue north to transit the Panama Canal, cross to Bermuda, and then on to Scottland before crossing to Svalbard. It is here we will have completed all three world records including, The First Person with Down Syndrome to Circumnavigate by Sailboat, The First Person with Down Syndrome to Sail to Antarctica, and The First Person with Down Syndrome to Sail from Antarctica to the Arctic!
Along the way, there will be many determining factors for each leg including weather, storm seasons, ice pack, and icebergs and we will be working with experts in the field to plan the best route in real-time to ensure the safest journey possible. In addition to our safety, we will closely monitor the crew's mental health, especially the kids. The safety and well-being of the crew will govern every decision and nothing is more important than everyone aboard.
