MEET THE OSBORNE ADVENTURE CREW!

While conventional crew dynamics require sailing prowess and teamwork, we also require a very unique skillset – raising three children during their most formative years. This need is so important that being an exceptional sailor has to be equally matched by the responsibility of a role model and mentor. Our expedition isn't only about breaking world records; it's about Down syndrome advocacy and inspiring individuals and families. We're not just a crew; we're a family bonded by a single purpose.

Our diverse experiences and backgrounds blend seamlessly into a dynamic team, a testament to the power of shared goals. As a crew, we will embrace challenges, break stereotypes, and create an environment where adventure meets family. Together, we will navigate uncharted waters, while forging a course towards a future of inclusivity and inspiration for those with a Down syndrome diagnosis.

PAUL OSBORNE - Photographer & Designer • 46

I have always seen myself as a "Jack of all trades, master of none." I am incredibly passionate and pour myself into whatever I am doing. I have always been one to push the boundaries in life and if I am afraid of something I will do it just to prove to myself I can.

I have spent a lifetime traveling, mountain biking, white water kayaking, climbing, camping, and hiking. A career photographer and designer, I love to adventure and explore, and as I age the reality of my mortality becomes more real every day. I refuse to let life pass me by and I want my children to know the love of adventure that has taken me around the globe.

VALERIE OSBORNE - Emergency Room Nurse • 43

"I will never get married and I will never have kids!" Oh, how wrong I was. I wanted to travel the world, climb mountains, surf exotic destinations, and lay in the sun. Now, I chase children, clean up puke, and dream of the places I thought I would visit. I am supposed to say, "I wouldn't trade it for the world!" but would I? Ask me next week.

Being an Emergency Room nurse and a mom is hard but worth it. I never knew how much I wanted a family until I had one. The rare moments when I see a sense of accomplishment on a kid’s face, receive a quick kiss and an "I love you mama.", or one of those giant bear hugs make it all worthwhile.

MONICA BURMEISTER - Educator & Naturalist • 36

A lifelong learner and teacher, I have spent years blending my passion for education and the natural world. A mermaid at heart, I migrated from landlocked Illinois to embrace the waterfalls, coastlines, and rivers of Oregon. Living off-grid, I dedicate my days to sharing the magic of the state’s Old Growth forests, guiding others to see the beauty and importance of preserving these ancient ecosystems.

Life off the beaten path is both a challenge and a privilege, offering a chance to explore and grow alongside nature. I believe that nature isn't just a classroom—it's the greatest teacher we have. Through exploration and adventure, I aim to connect people, especially the next generation, with the awe-inspiring world around us.

ROAKE IVER - Explorer • 9

Smart, too smart. Roake is the blend of his mama's and papa's best qualities. He loves his family more than anything and is always the first to help or offer direction. He loves science and is quick to tell anyone who will listen about his dreams of being an anesthesiologist. When you ask, "What are your favorite things?" his answer is always, "Everything!" Once Roake spent an entire day digging a snow cave with a friend. When I say all day, I mean ALL day. His goal? To dig it deep enough to sleep in, he was 7. As the hours the hole got deeper and deeper and you know what? He did sleep in it, alone in the freezing cold.

REN OBAN - Adventurer • 8

"Camp? Now!" a growly voice calls out in the dark as the sun rises. Meet Ren. Always, and I mean ALWAYS, up for an adventure! "Pool?" it's 30º outside. "Cave?" even though he has been crawling through caves for 8 hours. Ren is a lot like his papa, there is always another adventure. Ren was diagnosed at birth with Down Syndrome. Amazingly he didn't have any of the congenital defects that often accompany the diagnosis. Ren has learned to walk, talk and run... oh can he run. His love for life is contagious. From huge hugs with strangers to the excitement he experiences over the slightest kindness. Ren is the embodiment of the best things in humanity.

Freyja Osborne is all smiles while visiting the beach on Oregon Coast

FREYJA BEHR - Trailblazer • 6

Freyja was the Norse goddess of love and war and if you ever met a child who lived up to her name it is our incredible daughter. I have never met a sweeter, kinder child who will say the evilest things in a moment of anger, and oh how we love her for it. Freyja is fierce, she is a victor and she will never back down. We feel it is these traits that will help her on her way in life to accomplish great things. She is brilliant, kind, and courageous. She lives to spend time with the ones she loves. Freyja is the first to think of others and try and make them smile. She loves pink and dreams of walking the shores of mermaid island.
